August in Alaska

August is such a lovely time of year up here — fishing, harvesting, and so much to do! We've been busy with the garden and chasing silvers (coho salmon). Chad and our oldest got to go on a fishing charter, which was such a fun blessing after a poor red run (sockeye salmon) this year.

The little kids and I spent an afternoon picking black currants in a friend's neighbor's garden — that was such a treat! We turned them into fruit leather, homemade fruit roll-ups, and a fruit topping (hello, fruit crepes!). I've been using my oven as a dehydrator this season and it's actually been working really well.

We're also easing into back-to-homeschool mode. We're planning to start the last day of August this year — usually we wait until September, but with everyone's schedules this year, starting a little early just made sense.

I'm finding myself enjoying these last golden days of summer while also taking small moments to prepare for school, for winter, and for the season ahead.
