Best Soil for Starting Seeds: Our Test Made the Choice Obvious

This year, we did a simple soil test with our garden starts, and the results were clear enough that it changed what I plan to buy going forward. We made a science expirement out of it and I plan to track the reults as the seaons goes. I was honestly astounded at how different the results were!

testing seed soil starting mix. which is the best? miracle grow, black gold. or bakt to roots?

Disclaimer: I am not a strictly organic gardener. We live in Alaska where our season is short, we don't have animals for easy access to manure, and the fish scaps we have put us in danger of more bown bears making their way into our yard. With the one that sauntered through yesterday the saefty of our children is paramount to organic gardening for me. We buy organic when we can. When it makes sense. When its available.

I view it like this: If I am going to buy it conventional at the store I can grow a significantly higher quality with a tad bit of fertilizer at home. If all organic makes sense for you by all means, do it! Soil health is important. We build soil health while give our plants some "vitamin" supplemets as I've taken to affectionately calling the blue stuff.

Back to the potting soil/starting soil.

We tested three different potting soils:

  • Black Gold

  • Miracle-Gro

  • Back to the Roots

All three soils were purchased new this year. To keep the test as fair as possible, we used lettuce as the control crop. Each container received the same number of seeds and the same care card. The goal was simple: see which soil gave the lettuce the strongest start.

The difference was surprisingly obvious.

The lettuce grown in Miracle-Gro performed far better than the others. The plants looked healthier, stronger, and more vigorous. The growth was fuller and more consistent, while the other soils lagged behind.

This was especially helpful because gardening can involve so much guessing. Was it the seed? The watering? The light? The temperature? Those things can all matter, of course, but when the same crop is planted at the same time with the same basic care, the soil difference becomes much easier to see.

For us, Miracle-Gro was the clear winner.

I know there are many opinions about potting soil, organic options, seed starting mixes, and garden amendments. I’m not claiming this was a laboratory-level study. This was a real-life family garden test with the supplies available to us. But it was practical, visible, and useful — and that matters.

As a busy mom gardening in Alaska with a short growing season, I do not have endless time to nurse weak starts along. I need my plants to get going well. Strong starts matter here because the season is short, the weather can be unpredictable, and every week of growth counts.

After seeing the difference in this test, I plan to buy Miracle-Gro for this kind of growing going forward.

This is also a good reminder that garden decisions do not always have to be complicated. Sometimes a small side-by-side test gives you enough information to make a better choice for your own home and garden.

For our family, this test made the choice easy: Miracle-Gro performed best, and that is what I will reach for next time.

We are continuing to see the benefits into the growing season. We have started to harvest lettuce from the plants started in Miracle grow while the others remain small (alive, but small).
